What it's saying, in English
Hi, I'm Voq. I read the web out loud, so your eyes can take a break. ChatGPT answers, Reddit threads, long articles: one click, and I'll read them to you in a natural voice. I speak many languages, I'm completely free, and there's no account to create. Listen while you cook, commute, or just rest. If reading feels like work, let me do it for you. Add Voq to Chrome and hear any page in seconds.
How Voq reads Japanese
A natural Japanese voice
Voq uses Google Cloud AI voices, so Japanese sounds like a person reading, not a robot. The Japanese voice has a Japan accent.
Reads kanji, hiragana and katakana together
Japanese pages mix all three scripts in the same sentence. Voq reads the mix as written — you never switch a setting between scripts or languages.
Highlights each word
Words light up as they are read, so you can follow along — useful when kanji readings are still new to you.
Where you'll use it
News and long reads
Japanese-language news sites and blogs, read to you while you cook, commute or rest your eyes.
Japanese Wikipedia
Listen to articles on the Japanese Wikipedia instead of parsing dense kanji on screen.

Japanese, read aloud: what to know
Japanese has around 123 million native speakers, almost all in Japan, according to Wikipedia's Japanese language entry (citing a 2020 estimate). A few things are worth knowing before you listen.
- Three scripts, one sentence. Japanese text mixes kanji (characters borrowed from Chinese), hiragana and katakana in the same line. Voq reads the mix as written — you never pick a script.
- "は" is read "wa", not "ha". As the topic-marking particle, は keeps its old spelling but has been pronounced "wa" for centuries — one of the clearest cases where Japanese writing and sound part ways.
- One kanji, two different words. The characters 行った can be read "itta" (went) or "okonatta" (performed) depending on the sentence. Picking the wrong reading changes the word, not just the accent, which is why Amazon's own engineers single out kanji like this as a hard case for text to speech.
- Pitch, not spelling, carries the meaning. はし written exactly the same way can mean "chopsticks" or "bridge" — only the rise and fall of pitch across the two syllables tells a listener which one you mean.
- A held vowel changes who you mean. おばさん (obasan) is "aunt" or "a woman in her 40s"; hold the "a" one beat longer and おばあさん (obaasan) means "grandmother". The vowel length is the entire difference.
Learning Japanese? Listen while you read
- 1Follow the highlighting, not just the kanji
Let Voq's word highlighting show you where a word starts and ends — useful when you cannot yet tell on your own where one kanji compound stops and the next begins.
- 2Ask for text at your level
Ask an AI chat for a short Japanese passage at your JLPT level, then have Voq read it back to you.
- 3Listen for the held vowels
Play a passage once for meaning, then again listening specifically for long vowels and small っ — the pair that most often trips up new learners.

Japanese text to speech: FAQ
Is there a free Japanese text to speech reader?
Yes — Voq is free every day. It reads Japanese webpages aloud with a daily listening limit. The $2/month founding rate removes the limit.
How do I make Chrome read Japanese text aloud?
Add Voq, open the page and press play. Voq detects that the page is in Japanese and reads it in a Japanese voice.
What accent does Voq's Japanese voice have?
A Japan accent. Voq has one Japanese voice. If you need a specific regional or character voice, Voq is not the right fit yet.
Can Voq read a mix of kanji, hiragana and katakana?
Yes. Voq reads whatever script or mix of scripts is on the page — you do not need to convert anything first.
Does Voq always get kanji readings right?
Usually, but not always. Like any text-to-speech system, Voq picks the most likely reading for an ambiguous kanji from context. Occasionally a rarer reading gets picked instead — a known limitation of Japanese TTS generally, not unique to Voq.
Can Voq turn Japanese text into an MP3?
No. Voq reads text aloud in your browser and has no audio export. For audio files, use a voice generator.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up to use Voq, and none to pay for the founding rate either.
Can Voq help me learn Japanese?
It helps with listening and reading practice. Voq reads Japanese aloud with word highlighting so you can follow along. It is not a course and will not teach you grammar.
