What it's saying, in English

Hi, I'm Voq. I read the web out loud, so your eyes can take a break. ChatGPT answers, Reddit threads, long articles: one click, and I'll read them to you in a natural voice. I speak many languages, I'm completely free, and there's no account to create. Listen while you cook, commute, or just rest. If reading feels like work, let me do it for you. Add Voq to Chrome and hear any page in seconds.

How Voq reads French

A natural voice from France

Voq reads with Google Cloud AI voices, so French sounds like a person reading, not a machine. The French voice has a France accent.

Knows the page is French

There is no language menu to set. Open a French article, press play, and Voq detects the language by itself — then switches back when your next tab is in English.

Lights up every word

Each word is highlighted as it is spoken, so you can see which letters stayed silent and where two words were run together.

Where you'll use it

French news and magazines

Long French articles and opinion pieces, read out while you cook, walk or give your eyes a rest.

Wikipédia

Let Voq read French Wikipedia entries aloud — a quick way to hear specialist vocabulary pronounced in context.

Answers from AI chats

French, read aloud: what to know

About 396 million people speak French, according to the latest figures from the Organisation internationale de la Francophonie reported by France's foreign ministry in March 2026 — and around 65% of them live in Africa. Here is what to listen for.

  • Many letters are written but never spoken. The verb "elles président" (they chair) ends on the "d" sound — "pray-zeed" — while the noun "les présidents" ends in a nasal "-dahn". Same letters, but whether "-ent" is heard depends on what the word is.
  • Words run into each other. In liaison, a silent final consonant comes back to life before a vowel — "les amis" is heard as "lay-zah-mee". Listening to a voice is the easiest way to learn where French links words and where it does not.
  • "Les héros" is not "les zéros". Some words starting with "h" block the link: "les héros" (the heroes) is said "lay ay-roh". Link them by mistake and you have said "les zéros" — the zeros. A good voice keeps the two apart.
  • Same spelling, different word. "Les fils" can mean the sons (said "feess") or the threads (said "feel"), and "couvent" is a convent ("koo-vahn") in one sentence and "they hatch" ("koov") in another. The voice has to choose from context, like any reader would.
  • 70, 80 and 90 change across borders. France says "soixante-dix" (sixty-ten) for 70 and "quatre-vingt-dix" (four-twenties-ten) for 90. Belgium and Switzerland say "septante" and "nonante", and the Swiss also say "huitante" for 80. Voq reads whichever word the page uses.
  • Québec French sounds different. In Québec, "t" and "d" before "i" or "u" pick up a hiss — "dire" sounds close to "dzire", "tiens" close to "tsiens". Voq's voice is from France, so it will not do this.

Learning French? Listen while you read

  1. 1
    Watch for the silent endings

Keep your eyes on the highlighted word while it is spoken. You will quickly see how much of a French word is written but never heard.

  2. 2
    Hunt for liaisons

Play a short paragraph and mark every place where two words were joined. Then check your list against the text — it trains your ear faster than grammar tables.

  3. 3
Use texts made for your level

Ask an AI chat for a short French text at your level (A2, B1, DELF practice…) on a subject you enjoy, and have Voq read it to you.

French text to speech: FAQ

Is there a free French text to speech reader?

Yes — Voq is free every day. You get a daily listening limit for French pages at no cost; the $2/month founding rate lifts the limit.

How do I get Chrome to read French aloud?

Install Voq, open a French page, press play. Voq recognises French by itself and reads the page in its French voice, highlighting each word.

What accent is Voq's French voice?

France. There is one French voice, with a France accent. If you need Québec or another regional accent, a voice generator with several French voices fits better.

Can Voq read Canadian (Québec) French websites?

Yes, with a France accent. Voq reads the French text on any page, but its voice will not sound Québécois.

Does Voq get silent letters and liaison right?

Hear it in the demo above. The sample is the same French voice the extension uses. Like any text to speech, a voice can occasionally misread a word whose spelling has two pronunciations, such as "fils".

Can I save French text to speech as an MP3?

No. Voq reads aloud in your browser and has no audio export. For audio files, use a voice generator.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Voq needs no account to use, and none to pay for the founding rate.

Is Voq good for learning French?

For listening practice, yes. Hearing French while following highlighted words helps link spelling to sound. It is a reader, not a French course.
