What it's saying, in English
Hi, I'm Voq. I read the web out loud, so your eyes can take a break. ChatGPT answers, Reddit threads, long articles: one click, and I'll read them to you in a natural voice. I speak many languages, I'm completely free, and there's no account to create. Listen while you cook, commute, or just rest. If reading feels like work, let me do it for you. Add Voq to Chrome and hear any page in seconds.
How Voq reads Portuguese
Two accents to choose from
Portuguese is the one language where Voq gives you two voices: Portuguese (Brazil) and Portuguese (Portugal). Both are Google Cloud AI voices, so they sound like a person reading, not a machine.
Finds the language for you
With the language set to Auto, Voq recognises a Portuguese page by itself. Choose Brazil or Portugal in the language menu if you want a particular accent.
Every word lit up
The word being spoken is highlighted, so you can see exactly which vowels a Lisbon voice swallows and a Brazilian voice keeps.
Where you'll use it
News from Brazil and Portugal
Long articles and columns from Portuguese-language newspapers, played in the background while you do the dishes or ride the bus.

Portuguese, read aloud: what to know
Portuguese is spoken by about 258 million people in nine countries on four continents, according to the United Nations (2022). The two accents you are most likely to hear online are Brazil's and Portugal's, and they sound more different than most learners expect.
- "Tio" and "dia" give Brazil away. Before an "i" sound, Brazilian Portuguese softens "t" and "d": "tio" (uncle) sounds like "chee-oo" and "dia" (day) like "jee-a". In Portugal they stay hard — "tee-oo", "dee-a". Play both demos above and listen for it.
- Portugal swallows its vowels. European Portuguese shortens or drops unstressed vowels, so "telefone" comes out close to "tle-fon", while a Brazilian voice says every syllable: "te-le-fo-nee". Combined with its stress-timed rhythm, this makes European Portuguese sound more compressed.
- "Dois" ends in "sh" in Lisbon. At the end of a syllable, "s" sounds like "sh" in Portugal — "dois" (two) is "doysh". Most of Brazil says "doys", though Rio de Janeiro has the "sh" too.
- One mark, a different relative. "Avó" with an open "ó" is grandmother; "avô" with a closed "ô" is grandfather. "Pais" is parents, "país" is country, and "pode" is "he can" while "pôde" is "he was able". Text typed without accents can be read as the wrong word.
- The nasal "ão". The tilde makes a vowel nasal, as in "mão" (hand), "mãe" (mother) and "corações" (hearts). There is no English equivalent, which makes these words the best ones to replay while you watch the highlighting.
- Same language, different words. A train is a "comboio" in Portugal and a "trem" in Brazil; the bathroom is the "casa de banho" or the "banheiro". Portugal says "estou a falar" (I am speaking) where Brazil says "estou falando". Voq reads the words on the page — it does not swap one country's vocabulary for the other's.
Learning Portuguese? Listen while you read
- 1Learn with the accent you will use
Planning to move to Lisbon? Choose the Portugal voice. Learning for São Paulo or a Brazilian partner? Choose Brazil. Your ear adapts to the one you hear most.
- 2Compare the two voices
Play the same Portuguese paragraph once with each voice. Hearing "tio", "dois" and "telefone" side by side teaches the difference faster than reading about it.
- 3Follow the highlight through long words
Watch the highlighting on words like "pequeno" or "estamos" with the Portugal voice: you will see letters that are written but barely heard.

Portuguese text to speech: FAQ
Is there a free Portuguese text to speech reader?
Yes — Voq is free every day. Portuguese pages are read aloud with a daily listening limit at no cost; the $2/month founding rate removes the limit.
Does Voq have a Brazilian Portuguese voice?
Yes. Pick Portuguese (Brazil) for a Brazilian accent or Portuguese (Portugal) for a European one. Both are in the demo above.
Which voice should I pick, Brazil or Portugal?
The one that matches the Portuguese you need. Choose Brazil for Brazilian sites, media and travel, Portugal for European Portuguese. You can switch any time.
How do I make Chrome read Portuguese aloud?
Add Voq, open a Portuguese page, press play. Voq detects the language on Auto, or you can choose the Brazil or Portugal voice yourself.
Can Voq save Portuguese speech as an MP3?
No. Voq reads aloud in your browser and has no audio export. For audio files, a voice generator is the better tool.
Does it read accents like ã, ç and ô correctly?
Listen to the demo above. The samples are the voices the extension uses. Text written without accent marks, common in quick messages, may be read as a different word.
Do I need an account?
No. Install it and press play. Even paying for the founding rate works with an activation code, not an account.
Can Voq help me learn Portuguese?
It helps with listening. Hearing Portuguese while following highlighted words links spelling to sound. Use it alongside your lessons or app, not instead of them.
